Beat the Heat

When you're in the middle of a heat wave and need an escape? Morro Bay. With average June temperatures in the high 60's, I don't know where I'd rather be when the majority of San Luis Obispo County—or possibly the rest of the worldis experiencing record-high temps.

On today's cool morning coastal walk, I encountered many familiar feathered creatures common to the Central Coast: Great Blue Herons, Great Egretes and Curlews.

What a sight to behold.

SLO Hover

Today's behemothic clouds hovering over San Luis Obispo City called me into action. After work and finishing up a personal errand, I hit the winding, steady uphill trail of Islay Peak

Arriving at the top of this volcanic plug rewarded me with 360 degree views, swarms of butterflies and a short but aggressive bout of exercise. Then I stopped to pause. Turning every which way, the colossal clouds, suspended over the Santa Lucia mountain range, the vineyards of Edna Valley and the city of SLO, loomed larger than life.

Fleeting as these clumps of condensing water vapor may be, I nabbed a few with my camera.  Here today, gone tomorrow.

Early Morning

It's been far too long since I headed for a cool hike along one of my favorite exercise junctures—the Bluffs Trail at Montaña de Oro State Park. So early this morning, with gray brume covering the sky, I drove to this misty San Luis Obispo County Utopia for a power walk.

As this mostly flat dirt trail would along the bluffs and power waves crashed below, I stopped to capture a few of the interesting sights along the way. Spider webs. Wildflowers. Strange creatures inhabiting the tide pools.

A nifty SLO morning.
Montaña de Oro—"Mountain of  Gold"—is a site to behold. Goldenrod runs wild along the landscape.

Summer's Roll

June 21 came and went, leaving summer in plain view. This morning the sandy shores of Pismo Beach beckoned, and I headed for a bit of exercise on the beach before heading out for an afternoon of wine tasting in the Edna Valley region.

Today's summer weather? Pure brilliance.

Father's Day 2013

I won't see my dad for a few more weeks, but since my parents used to live in Morro Bay, I decided it appropriate to log in today's exercise on the strand of beach near Morro Rock. The skies opened up to blue brilliance and I found a few local birds who didn't object to my camera's intrusion.

Happy Father's Day.

June Bloom

I admit that this region's June Gloom brings an advantage: balmy, overcast skies that provide cool hiking conditions. As hundreds flocked to the coast today for the 28th Annual Classic Car Show at Pismo Beach, I took the high road and hiked up the short but steep slope of Cerro San Luis Mountain.

Amidst the giant, looming fluff in the horizon and the dry grassy trail, I managed to find a few pops of color and a little bit of bloom. And since I brought my trusty camera, I snapped a few photos. Here they are.

June Gloom

It's that time of year again. The clock strikes June and grey funk rolls across the sky, thick and unrelenting. It's no secret I have a hard time adjusting to the Central Coast's "June Gloom" and this year is no exception.

But today, big blue skies and puffy white clouds eventually pushed aside the overcast atmosphere in San Luis Obispo City, and after work I celebrated with a walk on sunny Pismo Beach. With an endless horizon, the supreme echo of clattering waves and the fresh ocean air...the prime weather made me want to jump in the water.

But I didn't. I walked along the beach and let the sand absorb my stresses of the day. In retrospect, I have gratitude for the gloom. Sometimes you need a little grey to appreciate the blue.

The gorgeous blue this afternoon.
June Gloom. Maybe it's not so bad.

SLO Stellar

I only have one word to say about my walk on Pismo Beach this morning.
