2014 First Day of Spring: Pismo Beach

Yesterday the first day of spring rolled beautifully into San Luis Obispo County. This annual celestial occurrence—also known as the Spring or Vernal Equinox—happens when the sun passes the equator moving from the southern to the northern hemisphere, and day and night are the same duration. This is the dawning of a progressively warmer season where the days continue to grow longer.

I got my exercise spending two-and-a-half hours walking along Pismo Beach in the late afternoon and early evening, kneeling in the sand, documenting the first spring sunset. The stunning cloud formation caused the sky's and shore's colors to morph from blue and silver to gold and pink. If I haven't said it before, I'll say it now: Clouds bring out the best in twilight's ethereal flirt over the ocean.

Here are a few snapshots of last night's once-a-year event.

Pismo Beach Winter Sunset

Although record freezing temperatures are gripping many parts of the country, San Luis Obispo County is holding its own. Today SLO Town (that's San Luis Obispo City) sported winter temps in the high 60s. After work, with giant clouds streaking the westward sky, I couldn't resist driving over to Pismo Beach for a short walk on the beach to catch the sunset.

With cool air and a blue horizon streaked with white puffs and gold sun, plenty of surfers and beachgoers enjoyed the water and the evening view. That's what I call a workout.

Pismo Beach sunsets always begin...

...and end beautifully.

SLO Progression

Fortunately for me, my work schedule allows me to snap photos of both the early morning horizon and the evening setting sun. Yesterday's sunrise was streakin' beautiful and the sunset was out of this world. I got my exercise in the evening by balancing myself on the slippery rocks at Shell Beach while snapping as many pictures as I could during the fiery sunset. What a fantastic day for the sky.

SLO Universe

I haven't logged much exercise this week, but I did catch last night's sunset. Way to work your magic in San Luis Obispo County, Universe.

SLO Awesome Skies

During the past week storm clouds moved in, allowing San Luis Obispo County to benefit from some much-needed rain. Those of us who love cloud chasing reaped the rewards of following the awesome skylines. I got plenty of exercise running up and downs stairs and hillsides, as well as walking on sand to capture these beauties.

SLO Weather

Today I woke up much too early. But since a blanket of clouds rolled in yesterday and possible rain was expected todayI didn't mind my premature awakening. When the sky is enveloped with brume, this covering of particles in the air makes for amazing photo opportunities.

So before my 5-mile run/walk this morning, I headed south for Pismo Beach with my camera.

The sundry sky opened up at sunset, just long enough for me to capture pockets of blue sky hidden behind the celestial horizon. I snapped more than a few pictures before heading back home. Then I logged my miles on foot.

Although today's weather couldn't seem to make up its mindshortly after sunset the clouds took over the sky and rained down a bit, only to clear up later in the dayI made up my own.

Maybe sleep a bit later...but keep on running.

Sloin' Down

Sometimes after a long workout, nothing beats taking the time to slow down and bask in the view.

Back on Track

With a long work day and the lingering effects of the flu finally behind me, this evening I faced a difficult choice.

Chase the mammoth storms clouds at sunset with my new camera; or, break in my recently acquired running shoes? I didn't have time for both.

As I peered at the heavenly sky while the disappearing sun quickly melded into a beautiful jumble, I knew  that if I drove to a prime spot to capture images of this stellar scene, I wouldn't have time to run before dark.

And I really needed to run. Catching the flu put me behind in my training and the half marathon looms 58 days and counting.

So I put on my running gear, stepped into my oh-so-supportive new running shoes and left my camera behind. I have no regrets. The flu knocked me for a loop last week and my heart and lungs needed a good workout.

Although I wasn't able to immortalize any scenes from tonight's magnificent sky, here is a photo from a few weeks ago when the sunset lit up the sea.

SLO Downtime

Disappointed that I caught the flu this week? You bet! But even though I haven't been able to run the past several days, my body is telling me something and I'm listening: slow down.

This past month was a whirlwind and the long working hours certainly caught up with me.

But on the bright side, my new camera arrivedjust in time for last night's fiery sunset.

SLO Seven

This morning I made up my mind to run/walk seven miles. Although I had to drag my legs along begrudgingly, the sum of my parts succeeded.

Throughout today's long, slow journey, something became clear: I need new running shoes. The ones I've been trodding upon are now broken-down, dirty and over-used. Before my next run, I've promised my feet that I will fit them with brand-spanking-new shoes that will cushion and carry me all over San Luis Obispo.

I'll save the old ones for sunset chasing on the beach.

A few nights ago one of the most stunning sunsets I've ever witnessed lit up the sky over Pismo Beach.
Last night pink reigned supreme at Shell Beach.

SLO Clouds

No sunset is ever the same. When was the last time you rushed out at the end of a workday to catch the ending light? Last night I did just that. Pismo Beach provided a progressive light show over the water. Clouds included.
